Fairfield Bay no longer collects taxes from Dollar General.
Here’s what happened.
Dollar General recently moved its location outside Fairfield Bay’s city limits by moving it only hundreds of yards from its old location at Hillcrest Plaza. It’s suspected that it moved locations to get out of paying taxes.
Craven’s general store and Dollar General are in nearly identical locations. Yet only local business owner Jimmy Craven’s store Craven’s is paying taxes to Fairfield Bay. Dollar General has weaseled out of paying taxes by quietly moving its location only yards away from city limits.
The solution is simple: Fairfield Bay can annex Dollar General’s land and make it pay it’s fair share of taxes for profiting off our city. Dollar General is literally profiting off our city while giving nothing back!
Sadly, one issue is standing in the way of this happening: Fairfield Bay’s mayor, Jackie Sikes.
Mayor Jackie Refused To Get Involved
Mayor Jackie Sikes has shown that she doesn’t care about the city’s loss of vital tax revenue from Dollar General.
In fact, her intentional snubbing of the situation held her back from getting a vital campaign endorsement that could have cost her her last election.
In the early days of her campaign, one of Fairfield Bay’s local residents who owns a small business confronted Jackie about the Dollar General tax issue.
If Jackie would verbally commit to going after Dollar General for not paying taxes, she would get the public support from the local business owner.
Jackie was confronted about the issue and asked point blank if she would commit to making Dollar General pay its fair share of taxes. Not only did Jackie refuse to commit, but she actively said no.
Since that moment, Jackie has quietly swept the issue under the rug as the city of Fairfield Bay continues to struggle financially.
Although Mayor Jackie Sikes has the time to give her husband keys to the city of Fairfield Bay, it appears that she doesn’t have the time to focus on billion dollar companies exploiting our city to pad its bottom line.
It’s time to make Dollar General pay its fair share. Local business owners shouldn’t have to pay taxes while billion dollar companies are off the hook.
